Ottawa Police to Get OPP Helicopter to Help Fight Car Theft

Ottawa police will soon have access to a dedicated helicopter for pursuing car thieves and conducting various police operations. The move comes after the Ontario government announced the purchase of five police helicopters, with one designated for use in Ottawa by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).

This aerial support is expected to be a game-changer for Ottawa police, who currently rely on drones with limited capabilities for tracking stolen vehicles and suspects. The helicopter, owned and operated by the OPP, will have an Ottawa police officer on board to provide local expertise.

The addition of Ottawa to the helicopter program is a response to the city's growing concerns about vehicle thefts and stunt driving. While the helicopter is expected to be operational within 12 to 18 months, Ottawa police are actively working to address these issues in the meantime. Recently, a 40-year-old man was apprehended and charged with six offenses related to car theft.

This initiative is a significant investment by the province, with the budget for the helicopters nearly tripling due to the decision to purchase rather than lease them. However, officials believe it's a necessary step to combat organized crime and enhance public safety in Ottawa.

The helicopter will be a valuable resource for locating stolen vehicles, pursuing suspects, and finding vulnerable or missing persons. It will also be available for use in neighboring Gatineau, Quebec, during emergencies. This collaborative effort demonstrates the commitment of both the provincial government and local law enforcement to address the challenges faced by the city of Ottawa.
